Weird sound problems

Hi, im running XP Home, Athlon 2.4ghz, 1204mb mem and
Realtek AC97 Sound card. my sound works perfectly, i can
play music, games, other program sounds etc, but when i
get the little popups or alerts, my pc makes a beeping
noise like an oboard sound card, Ive tried changing the
windows sound schemes but still it seems to do this,
please help its very annoying and makes the pc sound very
unhealthy

What "little popups or alerts"? Are they coming from some third-party
software, perhaps OEM applications bundled with the computer?
