Weird problem

Dave

Hope someone can help. I'm sure i have a virus. machine keeps slowing down
whilst online, and reboots often. Have zonealarm as a firewall and avg as a
scanner. tried the latest ZA with virus scanning as well. Seems to be a
problem when a scan is initialised.
if i leave the computer alone it runs without rebooting as soon as i try to
scan using either avg or ZA or a command line tool the pc reboots and
complains about recovering from a serious error.

Any help appreciated

Your problem may be with "the latest ZA with virus scanning." The 5.0
version of Zone Alarm is causing nightmares for many- even Zone Labs
recommends falling back to the previous 4.5 version. Have a quick look
through their forums and you'll see what I mean:

The first item in the official Zone Alarm FAQ refers to 5.0 problems:

The newest ZA 5.0 Free version is just fine, as it does not have the AV in
it. I have had it since it first came out and have not had any problems at
all. It works as well as the 4.xx version. If they want to have the latest
version protection without the headaches, they can upgrade to the 5.0 Free
version and use their own AV, which I prefer myself. :)

Try to run the scan in safe mode. Also, try some online virus scans:

If you didn't disable the Windows services which are enabled by default and you
installed a firewall from the "beginning of your computer being online" - then
the chances of your computer being hacked is nearly 100%. There are many
requirements involved in securing your computer. Trojan Horses and Backdoors
disable your anti-virus and firewall applications. Your computer is very easy
to abuse from this stand point.

You're here too Tracker ? Cripes. What default Windows services (aside from
Messenger, and maybe the Remote Registry access) should a user disable ?

If I read you correctly, a user who doesn't disable default Windows services
but does install a firewall stands a 100% chance of being hacked ?

All Trojan Horses and Backdoors disable AV and firewall applications ?

Kleeb.
