Weird problem with Windows maybe Virus

Hello All,

I have just received a new computer with Windows XP. After installing
Norton Anti-virus, I noticed some funny things going on. Even though
Antivirus is installed, I am unable to register it as the register wizard
terminates for no apparent reason. I have also noticed that RegEdit and
MsConfig when launched terminates only after a short time.

I am presuming that this is some kind of Virus or Spyware program.

Things I have tried.

1. Tried to install Norton Anti-virus without success.
2. Installed Spybot successfully and successfully downloaded new spyware
definitions. This did find some spyware programs however this did not solve
the problem.
3. Tried downloading updates from Microsoft website without success.

Questions.

1. Has anyone come accross this problem before.
2. Am I right in presuming it's a Virus or Spyware program or is it a
Windows issue.
3. Can anyone give me some help on how to either resolve this issue or
remove the virus or program.

Many thanks in advance,

Richard

Hi Richard

Being a new machine, I'd be very surprised if you had a virus. However, this does sound like you have one. Have you called the place where you purchased it from to let them know what is happening - being new this may be covered by warranty.

My first thoughts is the Klez virus. I know from experience this virus does terminate various processes, including norton avtivirus, regedit and others.

Goto http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.klez.removal.tool.html which is a symantec tool that will sweep your system for this virus and remove it if is found.

However, it may not be Klez but this gives you an idea of where to start....

Good luck!

Hi Richard,
The first issue in my mind is whether you had connected the pc to the
internet or a network b4 the problems occured, and b4 you installed NAV. I
have seen a fresh build computer get the 'sars' (sorry don't remember its
proper name) virus in just 6 seconds.

If the pc has not been connected at all. then it will be a software
compatibility issue. if connected it could be a virus.

If not connected, it is worth noting that I have had to install up to 4
times to get a good build b4. All the same instructions but with the speed of
modern pc's it is really easy to loose just one small byte. if it takes 2
months to find it then OK but sometimes it is just 2 minutes. I have searched
in vein for the answer and found that a rebuild is the fastest answer.

So if your pc is still fresh try a rebuild. If it is a virus, try a rebuild.

Sorry , been there too many times. On a new pc just ditch it and start
again, AND DON'T CONNECT UNIT IT ALL WORKS AND YOU ARE PROTECTED BY FIREWALL
AND AV.

BYEEE.

Some of the last few virii that have come out can hit your system as soon as
they detect it online, so they can hit it pretty quick. If you can get the
updates from MS downloaded and saved to the local drive, burn them to disc.
Then wipe out your system but make sure it is not connected to the net
(unhook your cables). After it is installed, put on all the patches,
install your Norton and try hookinh it up then. Should be ok.
