Weird Problem With Changing/Displaying User Account Picture

For no reason that I can determine, my XP box suddenly won't let me change my
displayed picture for my user account or any other account. The attempt fails
with the cryptic dialog box "Unable To Create Automation Object".

Any help appreciated!
