Weird network problem

Hi,

My second pc running win2k3 is wired to the primary router (netgear
wireless) through a long cat 6 cable. This second pc is on a different
floor. The connection is made up of two cables joined by one simple
coupler. No problems with the setup. Recently, I replaced the coupler
with a Netgear gigbit switch, since I needed to add a third system.
Now, the second pc is not online and I get the message: network cable
is unplugged.
The cable is the same, except now going through the switch. The switch
works, as I tested it with the third pc. I changed ports of the switch
and all ports work fine. No idea what else to do. If anything, the
switch should make things better by enhancing the signal, right?
The cable length from the wireless router to the switch is about 50m
and from the switch to the second pc is another 50m.
Any help would be appreciated.

Asim.

Drop the network adapters' speed to 10 MBites while testing.
You must also make sure not to plug your cables into a daisy-
chain port on the switch.

Hi,
That worked, but why. With the coupler, I get 100M. With switch I can't
go over 10M. From same switch, with a different short cable, I get 1G.
Same laptop (nic) used in all cases and different ports tested.
All cables are cat6. The switch is Netgear GS605 gigabit switch.

Maybe the switch requires a stronger signal or a less noisy
signal than your network adapter. You now know the rough
cause of the problem, so you should be able to track it down
for good by running a number of tests.

I wish I knew what more to test. I paid $$ to get the cabling done in
the house so that I did not have to use wireless b/w xp mce, xbox 360,
home office, etc.
What I dont get is that If a dumb(passive) coupler works, the switch
should make the connection better by acting as a repeater and enhancing
the signal.
