websites don't recognize ie 6.0

Hi;
I am using windows 98 through compuserve. I recently
installed ie 6.0 and the service pack. Many websites ask me
to update to ie 5.5 or higher. I am using ie 6.0. Also
sites are looking for a cookie that should be there from
previous visits. I clean out my cookies periodically and
maybe deleted them. How do I get the sites to recognize ie
6.0 and make them work without the previous cookie?
