Website to Computer

J

Judith Gibson

My web was initially created on my old computer with Windows 95, FP 98. Last
year I had to upgrade to FP 2002 per my host no longer providing/using
server extensions.

I recently got a new computer with Windows XP Pro and Office Pro 2003 and
purchased and loaded the full version of FP 2002. I have read several book
on how to publish a website from web to computer but this does not work for
me using FrontPage 2002, since my host no longer provides server extensions.
I have published from my old computer (now Windows 98, FP 2002) to web using
FTP. I have tried to get my website on my new computer and can see it listed
in the window in FP but it won't download. Any help would be appreciated. My
two computers are not connected.

Unless the remote server has the FP extensions, you can not open it in FP and publish it back to
your local machine. You would have to use 3rd Party FTP application to download the complete site to
folder on your HD. In most case the configuration info for themes, shared borders, navigation will
not be available on a server that doesn't have the FP extensions, so you will have to re-apply or
re-build those items.

Surely you can still use the FTP in frontpage (without server extensions,
otherwise what is the point?) I thought that was the alternative publsihing
feature within FP for those without server extensions).

BTW Judith has stated she is trying to use ftp not http: so the ftp within
frontpage *should* work.

if you're talking about the FTP transfer feature in Frontpage, you need to select
all the files and basically drag-and-drop from server list to the local PC file
list.

Please re-read what I wrote, as it deals with opening the site on the remote server in FP, not
publishing. In order for FP to open the site on the remote server for editing, the server must have
the FP extensions.
