Website Backup

I'm using: FP 2000 on WinXPHome.

I cannot get my FP website (www.HistoricHomeWorks.com) to publish back to my
desktop for a backup. I may have to wipe the server clean and start fresh.

I have used FTP to make a direct file copy of the website folders and files
to my desktop. Can I go to these files in FP and publish them over to my
hosting server?

Thanks

John

The correct procedure is to open your remote site in
FrontPage, then choose Publish Web from the File menu,
then specify a location on your hard disk. Is this what
you're doing?

If so, how does it fail? What error message do you get?
I have used FTP to make a direct file copy of the website

This is the correct procedure if your remote site doesn't
have the FrontPage Server Extensions installed.

Maybe. Try choosing Open Web from the File menu, and
specifying the folder where the backup files begin. If
FrontPage asks whether to add information, click Yes.

If the Web then looks and acts OK, then its probably safe
to publish. Make sure, however, thta Navigation view (if
you're using it) is complete, that Themes and Shared
Borders (if you're using them) are OK, and so forth.

Yikes. First off pick a tool to move files and stick with it. Switching
from FP to FTP and back is asking for file corruption and a broken web site.

Try working on making sure your desktop either has a web server (and
extensions) or you know how to work with a 'disk based web'.

You didnt say what you tried, but it sounds like you havent set up your
computer properly so you can publish to it.

Your site has the FP Server Extensions, based on:
http://www.historichomeworks.com/_vti_inf.html

In FP
File Open Web/Site and enter
http://www.historichomeworks.com/ then log in
Next, use File Publish Web/Site (all pages) and either browse to a top level folder on your hard disc, say C:\MyWeb or enter
http://localhost if using PWS/IIS and the FP SE locally

OK, I setup a new folder in the root directory on my C: drive, and go to it
from FP and FP sets it up as a website.

From FP I log into www.historichomeworks.com. I go >Files>Publish Web,
Browse to the target folder on my harddrive,
(.)Publish all pages,<Publish>

FP begins "listing files," then is copying files. Then, within 30 seconds I
get this error message:

***
An error occurred accessing your FrontPage web files. Authors - if authoring
against a web server, please contact the webmaster for this server's site.
WebMasters - please see the server's system long for more details.
***

I click OK, and the Publish has prematurely ended, FP is still running OK. I
find the sub-folders have been established,
the appropriate files have been copied into the web's main folder, but no
other files have been copied into the other folders.

Where is the "server's system log."

What is causing this?

John

Have your host run a check on the site FP SE
Also before you open FP
1) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all FP Temp Files
2) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all hidden *.web files
Then Open FP, run a tools recalculate hyperlinks and try again
