Webpage width

My "FP tutor" that I hired showed me how to make my website more standard
width, more like a paper on the screen, via the button on the bottom that
gives different sizes. We picked 795x470 and it looks great in both design
and preview mode. Unfortunately, when uploaded and even via "preview in
browser", it spreads across the entire screen again. I thought FP was
WYSIWYG? Would Expression Web work better in this aspect? I'm still trying
to decide whether to switch. Specifically I'm talking about
www.rolandrhoades.com . If I have to choose a pixel width, how do I know how
big a pixel is?
Want to find out what does or doesn't work before I spend time and money to
re-do my business website also.

Your "FP Tutor" apparently is not a real user of FP. Remember, those that
"can", do. Those that "can't" teach ;-)

That little button simply shows you how the page will look at different
screen resolutions. It's then up to you to actually lay out the page
accordingly.

You could use fixed width tables of about 760 pix to place all of your other
tables and content in.

Thank you Tom. I'm starting to feel that I'm getting somewhere now. It is
working now, though not exactly like I had thought, when I look at other
websites.

Can you give an idea of what layout you are looking for, or what is
wrong with what you have?

Your tutor produced a floating layout, that will always expand or
contract to fill the browser portal. Ton described a fixed width layout
that will always be the same width, regardless of the width of the
browser portal. It is possible (at least with IE7 and later, FireFox
and Opera) to produce a layout that has a minimum width and maximum
width, and will float in between - though this requires a knowledge of
CSS.

Note that screen resolution only determines the maximum width of the
browser portal - the actual width is determined by the way the user sets
up their desktop.
