Web services and IIS

Andrea De Nardis

Hi all,
IIS component make my image grow from 60MB to 120MB, so I cannot use it.
Do I really needed it for web services? Could I use the Apache server
component provided by Heidi Linda in XPEFILES.COM instead? Sorry if this is
a silly question but I am a newbie in web services (and in much more,
unfortunately).
Thanx a lot.
Best regards,
Andrea

My understanding is that Heidi's component works well enough for some
people. You can use a third party www service in place of IIS but the level
of testing being done on that third party component is minimal compared to
what ships in the default database of course. The burden of testing the
Apache component is on you. Also I can't comment on the ability of the third
party components ability to leverage the ASP.net feature component.

That's a correct answer, Andy,
but then why Microsoft does anything in reducing the huge amount of IIS
component dependencies? It seems strange to me that a service needs Internet
Explorer and Outlook Express in order to run!!!
Could you please do anything about this point?
Best Regards,
Andrea

For XP Pro (and therefore XPe) those are the dependencies. XP Pro
development work was started before there was a concept of componentization
4 years ago. For Longhorn every feature team is starting out with
componentization in mind.
