Web folders no longer working

G

Guest

I recently had a hard drive crash on my laptop and have since recovered. Now
I am having problems with web folders. All of the sites that I do for
clients, I am no longer able to "properly" insert hyperlinks, etc.

When I try accessing the web folders that were there before, I got the error
message "Documents in this folder are not accessable". So I figured I would
re-create the folders. I deleted the existing ones.

I have gone into "My Network Places" and tried to create new web folders,
but I get an error message of "The folder you enetered does not appear to be
valid. Please choose another."

If I go into FP and File->Open site and type in the URL, I get this error
message "The folder isn't accessable. The folder may be located in an
unavailable location, protected with a password, or the filename contains a /
or \."

I get the same result with several sites on different servers. I have also
been successful in opening these sites from my PC. I know the problem is
with my laptop, but I don't know how to fix it. I have removed both Office
2003 and FrontPage 2003 and re-installed both.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Without knowing what was required for you to recover from your hard drive "crash" it's sort
of hard to know where to start.

Assuming you did "Not" reformat the hard drive and reinstall everything, go here:
http://www.95isalive.com/fixes/fpclean.htm and download FP Cleaner.

Run all of the functions and be sure to set FrontPage to "not" attempt to open the last web.

Then see if you can open any webs, If not post back and we'll dig deeper.

Steve. Thanks for the nifty tool. It didn't help my situation however.
Here is what I did to recover from my "crash".

I removed the drive from my laptop and put it in an external enclosure. I
then connected it to my PC through USB. I used Ghost to make an image of
the drive. I bought a new drive and used Ghost to put the image back on the
new drive.

Laptop then booted as expected and everything has worked to this point
except this annoying Web Folder thing. It isn't just a FP thing either
because you should be able to do web folders even with Windows XP and I
can't on my laptop now.

Thanks for the help though.

Obviously something in your "ghosting" failed
Try a Detect & Repair from Help in FP or uninstalling FP and reinstalling it

Thank you for your reply. If I could delete the other thread, trust me I
would...

I have tried everything that you suggested. Nothing has worked. Here is
another tidbit of information.

If I go into My Network Places and try to add a new Network Place that
refers to a FrontPage web (ie., http://) I get the error message "The folder
you entered does not appear to be valid." However, if I add a Network Place
using a standard UNC path to a share on my LAN, it works great.

I have searched everywhere in the KB and online and I'm not getting any
results. I may just have to wipe my laptop and start over because I don't
think there is a solution to this problem.

Thanks Kathleen. I downloaded the add-in, but when I try and install it, I
am getting an error message stating "Error 1911. Could not register type
library for the file C:\Program Files\Open Web\OpenWeb.dll. Contact your
support personnel."

I don't see any support information on Jimco's website. Any help would be
greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I solved the problem on my own. Thank you to everyone who helped me. For
those who had nothing better to say other than to scold me for an
unintentional mistake....bugger off!

The fix: Apparently the following file was corrupted C:\Program
Files\Common Files\System\Ole DB\oledb32.dll

I basically renamed this file. Replaced it with a fresh copy and
re-registered it with regsvr32. Thanks to all for the help.

Isn't that what my post in this thread to the link at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=287402 told you to do 2 days
ago (which you claimed you tried and didn't work)

From that KB article:

2. Manually register the OLEDB files that are used with Web folders.
To do this, follow these steps: a. Open a command prompt.
b. Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
cd "Drive:\Program Files\Common Files\System\Ole DB"
where Drive is the letter of the drive.
c. Type the following command, and then press the ENTER key:
RegSvr32 oledb32.dll
d. Click OK when the RegSvr32 DLLRegisterServer succeeded
message appears.
e. Type the following command, and then press the ENTER key:
RegSvr32 msdaurl.dll
f. Click OK when the RegSvr32 DLLRegisterServer succeeded
message appears.
g. Type the following command and press the ENTER key:
RegSvr32 msdaipp.dll
h. Click OK when the RegSvr32 DLLRegisterServer succeeded
message appears.
i. Close the command prompt.

Where does it say "Please delete the corrupted version of oledb32.dll (which
has just successfully registered) and replace it with a version from the
original CD and then re-register it again? I must have missed that part...
