Web buttons altered to null values (amongst other things)virus?

I recently experienced a virus/spyware attack that appears to have been
successful. Web buttons are non responsive/null (such as the delete and send
buttons on my web mail). I cannot change my background wallpaper. I've
tried system restore about 15 times, but it keeps telling me it cannot do a
restore and to retry. I also cannot delete many files (no errors, just
doesn't work).

The initial attack disabled Norton AV and changed my wallpaper to a warning
message about spyware attacks (from ad-sherrif.com). I was able to reboot
and run Norton, so it cleaned 6 viruses, but it appears the bad files are
installed (I didn't notice any unusual apps in 'add/remove programs'). One
bad file I discovered was called "rock.exe".
System is a Dell Inspiron 9300 running Win XP Home.

Any help/suggestions would be appreciated (like where I can go in the
registry to fix this)!
