WDS 3/Windows XP SP3 displays "unable to display preview" for allfile types

WDS is properly working as expected, other than I can't display
previews of any file types. The preview window just indicates "unable
to display preview." Any suggestions? There is not much out there on
this error.

Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for
Windows XP, but only for Service Pack 3 (SP3), until 14 Apr-09. Chat and

I tried several "chat" supports and the support person never could see
anything I was typing. I could see their typing, though. I eventually
gave up and tried email support; I'll report back if I get a useful
answer.

This entire problem seems to have been fixed in WDS 4.0.
