Unfortunately there is no standard for WD hardware.
Software watchdog won't help you in some serious situations. But you can
write your own.
You need hardware WD, some devices have them by default on motherboard.
You need doc for your MB and you must write support for it, usually few
lines of code. This can be requested from manufacturer.
Also there is a chance that you can request WD driver from MB manufacturer.
