Was this a Virus?

Yesterday my pc wouldn't boot up, at the initial boot-up screens where,
after boot from cd rom is displayed, instead of booting to c drive I was
getting Y?Y? displayed. I couldn't boot to safe mode either.
The only fix was to re-install a backup of my HDD.
If this was a virus, how did it sneak past my AV program Kaspersky with the
latest updates?

The display was showing Y and the infinity symbol Y and the infinity symbol,
not Y?Y?

Doubtful it was viral in nature.
