I have always understood that factory installed software(os) is under
warranty,and support must help as long as the computer is under warrenty.

It would depend on the computer's and the software's warranties, would
it not?

OEM versions if Windows *are* intended to be supported by the computer
vendor, but I wouldn't assume all other softwares are handled the same.
 
Not at all. Different OEM's have different policies regarding the OS and
software being covered under warranty, as a small OEM system builder I
specifically state there is NO warranty on the OS or software. Why you ask?
Because that is something the customer has a direct effect on, and can screw
up due to lack of knowledge, and end up crashing the OS due to malware
infections, poor/no maintenance, and general user stupidity.
 
The warrenty and sales Department at Dell Headquarters says Operating
Systems installed at the factory have the same warrenty as the Hardware.

Which explains why Dell will very often ask you to restore your
computer using their recovery partition. That is the only way they
have of knowing the state of the operating system.

In 20 calls over 2 years I have never been asked to use their recovery
partition.
