Warning Microsoft Defender Problem

S

Stuart

There appears to be a bug in Beta 2 Defender that is generating three to six
System Checkpoints per day at 20+ megabytes each. There is no option to turn
off the checkpointing. I found the problem by needing to do a restore and
found the checkpoint I had set manually hard to find through the maze of
Microsoft checkpoints. Because it's beta, it's hard to get any answer as to
when the bug will be fixed. If I don't hear anything in the next 24 hours, I
plant to uninstall. Actually, this will be the second uninstall. I didn't
like Beta 2 as well as Beta 1 and tried to go backward, but MS would not
reload the Beta 1.

It's not like Microsoft Defender is necessary. I have AdAware, SpyBot S&D
and Spyware Blaster loaded and they all work fine. Anybody know anything
about deleting back system checkpoints? The microsoft.public and private
newsgroups are no help on this.

I cannot confirm this on any of the tens of systems I have installed it on,
I just checked 3 computers I have here... no such thing happens.
Nor is there any mention of this problem on the microsoft newsgroups.

You might want to post this on the MS newsgroups with your problem

I cannot figure out which Microsoft group to use. They usually do not like
to answer questions about programs in beta unless the group is organized
specifically for that purpose.

I am sure the problem is happening on my machine. Did you execute the
wizard in "Using System Restore to undo changes" in the Help and Support
Center? My system restore calendar is loaded with Windows Defender
checkpoints.

I'm not sure if this is what you're asking. But I'm pretty sure you go to the control panel, system, and system restore, and check the box that says turn off system restore on all drives, and confirm yes to the prompt. Then shut down and restart your computer from a cold boot.

Once your computer is back on, go back to the system restore window and uncheck the box and click ok.

But if you have something wrong with your computer, like an adware infection, deleting old system restore points might do more harm than good.

No Staurt.

None of teh standard MS News Groups support this Bweta software and a special News Server
has been setyup specifically for the Beta Software's support. JBob posted this information
and I created an easy to use News Server URL.

In addition, you can access this special News Server via a web front-end through te
following URL...

I saw a post on the private newsgroup that jbob gave talking about this.

Its perhaps a problem with defender and Ie7 beta... but I am avoiding
installing
ie7 beta on all machines, because its too critical a component for windows
functionality.

from that newsgroup:

"My desktop computer shows repeated restore points from Windows Defender
since I installed IE7. My laptop, which retains IE6, shows no such activity.
Suggests there might be a link. Also posted on
microsoft.public.internetexplorer.general. "

there is a registry hack mentioned in that discussion

I noticed this problem weeks ago, right after the latest engine
upgrade for Windows Defender. I have since uninstalled WD. This topic has
already been discussed in the private Windows Defender newsgroups.
Presumably the checkpoint glitch will be fixed in the next engine upgrade.

There must be certain circumstances in which this occurs.
It's not happening to me.

its probably a IE7 combined with Defender problem from what I read.

I wasn't using IE 7 when Windows Defender went crazy with Checkpoint
creations. This glitch started when Microsoft upgraded the scanning engine
for Defender, last month.

Microsoft is unlikely to support this product on the msnews server. Go to
the privatenews.microsoft server as above. This is set up specially for
Microsoft beta products.

I did that on my own computer some while ago and installed Spybot and
continue to do it on Client's computers as I have very little confidence in
this product. It used to work OK under the Giant Software name. Beta1 had
some loose ends still referring to Giant but seemed to run OK. Beta2 is a
complete mess certainly not an improvement. It can't be updated properly
which is ironic since it is one piece of software which is an absolute
requirement to be updatable.

If you're talking about restore points, shut it off & it'll delete them,
then turn it back on.
