warning about hauppauge products

in plain...it sucks big time....

I have read many places that many other people with
hauppauge products can´t use it with vista
media center ....It can be used with the software
from hauppauge but even the beta drivers doesn´t
support vista media center use....in fact many get the error
in media center "NO tv tuner hardware found"...

On hauppauges website they say that there´s no planning
for an update of the driver for several of their products!!!!

In short...if you want a tv tuner that´s fully functional in vista
AVOID hauppauges stinkin products!....

That unfortunately is the attitude of many of the sellers of hardware. This
means the consumer HAS to check with the manufacturer to make sure that they
will be drivers for the hardware that they use. Currently I have the
following

1. SoundBlaster live card that will NEVER have Vista support
2. Dlink USB wireless NIC card that may have vista support
3. Logitech webcam that should have Vista support sometime next month

I gave away the SoundBlaster and I still have the other 2. Before I
upgraded to Vista I checked to see that my important devices (Video
card/motherboard NIC card/mice/PCI-E SATA 2 card) actually had drivers, the
other devices if they worked that was the icing on the cake.

BTW I own the Hauppauge HVR-1600 that works in Vista - the only problems I
have with Hauppauge is the non-existent customer support.

SoundBlaster live drivers are on Windows Update. Just connect to internet
and Windows Vista will download them and you sound card will be installed
automatically!

And it works fine in Vista with the Win TV programme, and partially works
with media centre, partially as it doesn't tune all the stations. Anyway
Media centre goes to far round the block to get hwere its going anyway,,,,
may as well use WinTv and get straight there,

However, not yet working with 64bit as this matrix shows:

http://www.hauppauge.co.uk/pages/Promotions/vista.html

A year ago I emailed Hauppauge support about their support for the
relatively new HVR 1300 in XP 64. This is the text of their reply:

"Hi,

Unfortunately we do not officially support x64 yet, there are some
beta/alpha drivers on our forum for people to try however there is no
support for it yet.

Best regards "

I'm now on Vista 64 bit, and still waiting for some drivers. There are some
fairly irritated users on their forums, which you can read here:

My sound Blaster Live works with Vista and has for most of the Beta builds.
"NEVER have Vista support" is obviously incorrect.
Have you updated through Windows Update and selected the sound driver?

Unfortunately not all of their products are being supported. I have a Gateway
Media Center that came with the PVR PCI II tuner (basically its the 150MCE
card). This has no support beyond XP.

Keith,

I'm running into issues getting Vista to use the updated drivers from
Hauppauge. No matter what it says that driver installation failed (couldn't
find driver for device). I would love to know if there was something tricky
you had to do to get your 1600 to work..

Weird, I had no problems installing the drivers. My only problem is I
cannot get WinTV to work with my Satellite, so I use GB-PVR. Did you use
the HWCLEAR program to remove the install and try again?

yeah, but I'm trying to get the drivers in through Device Manager and
updating for the 'Multimedia Video Controller' (the Hauppauge). It seems
like I've tried everything, including HWCLEAR.

My goal is to just get the card and IR device installed and let Media Center
do the work. Maybe the 1600 isn't right for this even if I get it working,
but I can't get to that point...

So for you it was just install hardware, download driver and done?

Thanks for the info.

Works fine here including the remote. Using Ver 3.3c drivers from
Hauppauge. My only gripe with the MC is that you can either choose
Analogue TV or DVB but not both.

I also have a PVR-150 and the card works. The remote doesn 't. It controls
volume and stop, play, record functions. But the CH+/-, direction keys and
OK do not. I went to their Web site and downloaded the most up-to-date IR
file (from 2004) and it still doesn't work. Is the remote working for you?

I can't remember where I found it (I'm sure if you Google you can find the
site(s)) but there are web sites available somewhere that give detailed
instructions on how to assign commands and/or keystrokes to the remote
buttons. It's tedious work, but I had my Hauppauge remote working with
everything in WMC, but then I wanted a second tuner, so I bought the PVR-150
kit with the Media Center remote and removed the Hauppauge remote
completely.

Again, Google for the info on changing the Hauppauge remotes commands, the
info is out there. I'm sorry I no longer have the ini file I built or I'd
simply post that for you, but as I have no intention of going back to the
Hauppauge remote any time soon, I deleted it and the info about assigning
commands . . .
