Warnig message on saving files, not a shared file.

When saving various files, intermittently, I receive the
following message, these are not shared files I am working
with:

"The file xxxxxxxx.xls may have been changed by another
user since you last saved it. In that case, what do you
want to do?" With button options "Save a copy"
or "Overwrite changes."

I know no one else is working on the worksheet, can any
one tell me why this happens and what I can do to stop it?

I had this "problem" when opening a workspace file (.xlw). When closing each
of the component workbooks, I got this message. When I dispensed with the XLW
file and just opened each one separately, no more message.
