Do I need a wireless access point if I want to connect a desktop computer and
a wireless router to the same cable modem? What is a wireless access point?
How do I connect a wireless router to my cable modem while having my desktop
computer still connected to the same cable modem?

Val,

If you have a wireless router, a Wireless Access Point is unnecessary. A WAP is
used when you have a wired router, and need to add wireless capability.

Generally, WAPs were developed when people didn't want the expense of replacing
their wired routers with wireless ones. Currently, wireless routers are as
cheap as WAPs, so there's really no advantage to buying a WAP anyway - just buy
a wireless router. If you want to use your current wired router, and just need
a WAP, just setup the wireless router as a WAP.

In your case, just connect your wireless router to the cable modem, and connect
the desktop computer to the wireless router. That will put the desktop computer
on the LAN with your wireless computers, and protect all computers from
malicious Internet traffic.
