Wanting to Delete Old Copy of XP

Guest

On start up it stops on a screen that displays 2 copies of XP for me to
choose which one. This came about after doing a clean install of XP Home.
How do I delete the old copy? Thanks

Right click My Computer, select Properties, Advanced. In the Startup and recovery section click the Settings button. In the System Startup section, click the Edit button to open BOOT.INI in Notepad. Remove the erroneous/duplicate entry. If you're not sure what to delete paste the contents into a reply message.

Hi,

Do they both work if selected? If not, click start/run or hit the winkey+r,
then type MSCONFIG into the run box and hit <enter>. On the boot.ini tab,
click the button to check all boot paths, it should offer to remove the
invalid one.

If they do both work and load separate installations, then choose the one
you want to keep and load it. From Windows Explorer delete the system
folders for the unwanted installation and reboot. Then follow the above
procedure to remove the reference to the unwanted installation.

Thanks Doug for your reply. Here is the info you asked for, as I am not sure

Sorry Doug, I sent send without attaching the info.:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\NEWXP
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\NEWXP="Microsoft Windows XP Home
Edition" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home
Edition" /fastdetect

Hi,

The first listing under [operating systems] is your default. If this is the
one that is normally booted, then remove the second entry. In other words,
keep this:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\NEWXP
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\NEWXP="Microsoft Windows XP Home
Edition" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

and delete this:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home
Edition" /fastdetect
