First of all is their a win7 newsgroup yet?

I am going to upgrade to 7, I have the upgrade version.

I figured with my hd 4.5 years old I would get a new one, which will start
from scratch.
Does anyone know if windows 7 will do a clean install from the upgrade
version to the new HD, without having XP on it?

This computer is a gateway with a divided partition, which has a restore
partition in it. Since MS didn't want to hand out copies of xp then.
I believe I do have a copy of xp around here, I know I can have it standing
by in case.

I was just wondering, after I put the new hd in if I was going to need it,
since win7 will do a clean install of 7 on an xp computer anyways.

Thanks

Bruce

You could always burn the XP install partition to a CD-R for safe
keeping in case you need to re-install Win7 and it asks for an old
version of Windows.

No, and not likely to be with all the crap that's been posted in the Vista
general group.....
go here for the official MS Windows 7 forum:

No. It seems MS has stopped that method. Apparently, because the upgrade
only checked for the presence of the EULA and not a Product key.
You will need to re-install XP on the new drive and start the install of Win
7 from within XP.
Unless you change your mind and buy a full version...

Apparently, the double-install trick that worked with Vista amazingly
also works with Windows 7.

See Method #3:

Ed Bott confirms this:

Scroll down to:

"Does the double-install trick made famous in Windows Vista still work?"

No ethical issues since you certainly have a vaild qualifying OS. Funny
you don't need to demonstrate it! Also, many people who don't have a
qualifying OS will be able to use the same trick. Weird, huh? It's not
like MS didn't have enough time to plan this out...

I've just finished an "In-Place" upgrade of Windows XP
to Windows 7, and they said that could not be done either!

The "double-install trick" I have not tried yet.

I just Did it this morning .
Post how to do it for the OP.
