This post has me rather confused...

What parts are you thinking of replacing? If the drive has, as you say, had
a head crash, the platters are damaged. If the platters are damaged your
data (or most of it) is going to be unrecoverable. If your data is gone, why
not just replace the drive and start again?

If you are hoping to recover lost data from the platters, I suggest that you
are on a fools errand. Unless you have a clean room handy you are only going
to make things worse by opening up the drive. If your data is that important
to you, I strongly suggest you seek out a professional data recovery
company.

I am aware of the implications and most likely will not get all the data
back. I have all the right tools and a clean room is not essential, don't
believe the hype. I don't intend on running the drive for any length of
time. The data isn't important enough to spend thousands on but is worth an
investment in a drive and a bit of my time. I believe in having a go, it has
always served me well. I was under the impression that I would run into like
minded people on here but all I have found so far is negative rhetoric.

Gee, I've got 3 or 4 Seagates, right around then, right sized, all
that size. They all work perfectly. Parts wouldn't interchangeable,
I guess.
