so I'm addicted to assorted chatboards, news sites etc and yet need to
get some work done on my PC. I would really like a bit of freeware that
I could configure to block certain sites between, say, 8am and 6pm
daily. Cos otherwise I'm an idle s0d and will surf all day rather than
work! help! I'm using IE6 on XP. I can use content filtering but need
to turn it on and off.

SelfControl v1.0 works good. If you haven't already tried it, then it can
be a steep learning curve.

Ask a woman to marry you,

These aren't what you are looking for, but might help...

1. The 10 plus 2 widget (the updated version) can remind you to work
for 10 minutes and rest for 2 minutes. It may help you stay on task.
You can altar the time intervals.

2. TimeSnapper will create a "timelog" of your activity for you to
review. I know I get more done when I have my TimeSnapper on in the
background monitoring my activity. I get a LOT more done.
