Thanks. I've tried that before, and it does not cause the icons in
Windows and Office to change back to their Win98/2000 look. It just
changes the overall style and color of the Windows appearence.
There are two ways to get the "old style" icons (which I prefer as
well). The first is to hack a bunch of files and replace the 24-bit
icons with their 8-bit equivalents. This is cumbersome, and potentially
dangerous if you're not comfortable using a resource editor, but it's
the best long-term solution since it doesn't affect any other parts of
your system.
The other option is to reduce the display resolution of your system to
something less than 24-bit. Follow the above advice (right click desktop
and select properties). Then click the Settings tab and change the
display quality to 16-bit. Then reboot your system. At this point
Windows will stop using the 24-bit icons and will instead use the "old
style" icons. Your system will also run noticeably faster and will
consume 10-20MB less memory (depending on your system). But you will
lose some display quality, and it would be up to you to decide whether
you could live with it.
FWIW, my system has been set to 16-bit color for years...
