Adding My Music to the classic start menu

P

Phil Rabichow

I use the classic start menu with Win XP Pro. When I click Start/Documents,
there are icons for Data (My Documents) & Pictures (My Pictures) on the top
right of my flyout menu. I would like to add a Music shortcut to this
spot. Is there a place in the registry where I can do this?

I'm currently not using XP at the time of writing this post, i'm logged on
to vista. Try right clicking on the taskbar and, fromt he drop down menu,
click on Properties. This will bring th taskbar and startup menu properties
window. Click on the startup tab and then, in the startup tab window, click
the Customize button.

When the customize window opens you will see a list of start menu items.
scroll down to Music. Click on the option marked 'display as a menu' then
click OK.

If it is not displayed on yuor menu at the moment it may be because the
option is set to don't display this item. By clicking the radio button next
to the 'display as a menu' the music folder will be placed on the start
menu.

That is for XP Start Menu not Classic Start Menu.

Hi John:
Thanks for responding. Ayush is correct...that only applies to the WinXP start
menu, not the classic start menu. Have any idea what registry key might control
it? (I checked Kelly's site & couldn't find it).

First of all, I give you A+ for this question. Maybe Microsoft's Developers
didn't notice this. After 2 hours of Googling on this topic, I found nothing
but the 100s of utilities, which can Customize Recent Documents in several
ways. But none of them was able to put "My Music" or any folder in Recent
Documents. I installed an application called "X2 Net Recent Documents" but it
did nothing but customize the Recent Documents in his way like view them by
Application, by Date etc and also a System Tray icon for quicker access. But
of no use because its too was not able to place My Music or any other folder
in Recent Documents. But I did notice one thing that XNET create its own
folder in My Recent Documents which what we called is "System Folder". I know
one way of creating a System Folder on Desktop or My Computer which can not
be delete. I will try this later on My Recent Documents.

For the time, I have a little trick. As you know My Music is a subfolder of
My Documents. So:

1. Right-click on Taskbar and Choose Properties.
2. Click Start Menu tab.
3. Click Customize tab under "Classic Start Menu".
4. Make a check mark on "Expand My Documents".

This way you will be able to see Start - Documents - My Documents - My Music
but not underneath of My Pictures.

Moreover, read the following article. Have very good tweaks for using Recent
Documents without installing any third party utiltiy.

http://pcworld.about.com/magazine/1910p190id57987.htm

And this tweak can increase number of items listed in Recent Documents from
default 15 to less or above:

Whenever I found a solution of placing My Music [System Folder] in Recent
Documents, I will let you know!

Hope this will be a little bit of help, let us know!

Meanwhile, you can also place a shortcut to "My Music" on Start Menu by just
dragging and dropping it on Start button. You can see it above Start -
Programs.

Hope this will be of any use, let us know!

Hi RajKohli:
Thank you so much for all the time you've spent trying to give me a solution!!
I've read the articles, but they don't actually put My Music on the top of the
documents submenu. Actually, the folders above the document submenu aren't really
in the Recent Documents folder anyhow. I'm probably being knitpicky, as I know I
can place a shortcut on the top left side of my start menu. Anyhow, if you find a
way, please let me know (& if I find a way, I'll let you know.)

Hi Mike:
Thank you for your response. I appreciate it. Your solution would place the
Music folder shortcut on the left side of the start menu, in the section just
above Programs. I know I can do this, but I'd rather place it with the My
Documents & My Pictures shortcuts. I'm not trying to be knitpicky, but I'd
like to learn what controls this part of the display in the registry (if it
does).
