Mate of mine has just installed Wanadoo Broadband.

Went OK on installation and got broadband.

Now computer will not reboot.

There is a recovery menu in the boot stage but he invokes this but it
still will not carry on to boot WXP.

He has contacted Wanadoo but says they are U/S

Any ideas?

p.s. a bit diffcult to expain further as I do not have access to the
computer and he lives 150 miles away.

Sorry: The OS was W ME.

He tells me he had to disable the Firewall & Virus checker to install
the Broadband but he didnt switch them back on before he went online.
He says they didnt tell him to do that?

Is it poss he got a nasty bug straight away?

Where does he go from here?

Absolutely

Where does he go from here?

he needs to use something like Knoppix or Barts PE that will run off the CD
to recover any data (or remove the HDD and plug it in as a slave to another
machine) and then re-format and re-install the OS (I would think.....)

Does he have access to antivirus program on CD? Most AV can be run from CD
or Keydisk or even floppies. Scan and see if there is an infection. What
happens if they try to boot into safe mode? If they can boot into safe mode
run scans from there.

Obviously he can reinstall the operating system which will clean any
infection (if that's the problem) but they would also loose all data on the
drive. Also if they want to save any data it needs to be scanned before
putting it onto the clean system. Its also good to know why a computer is
broken and reformatting will wipe it all out so you never know what the
fault is.
