Wandering desktop icons...

Steve Hawkins

Despite having auto arrange turned off, I find that the icons on my desktop
do move about, and I also occasionally find a number of windows open in
cascade on start up even when I have not been using them.(!?)

I currently do not use 'lock icons on desktop' because this results in ugly
and distracting, coloured, text boxes appearing under the icons. Is there
another way of stopping the icons from wandering while keeping the plain
white text and no box of my preferred arrangement?

Thanks Eric, and apols for the delay responding (central heating playing up
too!).

I don't seem to have a 'TweakUI' utility, and Kelly's invitation to download
a button for it thus fails to find it. Presumably this means the full
package of XP was not loaded when the pc was set up: should I rerun the
install disc? Can I do this for just the utilities without upsetting the
rest of the XP installation?

TweakUI doesn't come with Windows. It is one of the PowerToys. You can
download it here:

Thanks for the very prompt response!

Have now visited Power Toys - which looks to have some 'solutions' to other
problems than the one that brought me here! All looks v useful.

Have set up the TweakUI - and its already highlighted a few things I hadn't
noticed in Control panel, and found stuff about 'permissions' I had also
been wondering about too, so thanks for that. I will now have to wait for
the next 'items wandered' incidence to see if this is a way of curing that.

Kind regards,

SteveH

Go to.
http://users.rcn.com/taylotr/icon_restore.html
And download and install Icon Restore.
How to use is shown on the web site.

Try this,

right click on desktop
tick Align to Grid
tick Show Desktop Icons.

Works for me.
