WAB Windows Address Book Questions - Exporting + Adding Fields + etc

T

tmb

Windows XP Pro comes with a free utility named Windows Address Book. (WAB)

1 - Can you add fields to it?

2 - Can you export _all_ the fields to a standard delimited format so that
you can import into Outlook, Access or Excel?

3 - Are there any Windows Address Book newsgroups or forums around?

4 - We are considering using WAB on some systems to save the cost of
Outlook... are there any issues or problems with using WAB I should be aware
of?

thanks - tmb

Some. Right-click on the third or higher column header to see the choices.

2 - Can you export _all_ the fields to a standard delimited format so that
you can import into Outlook, Access or Excel?

No, Groups and Folders will neither export nor import; only Shared Contacts
will export. You can configure WAB to share contacts (not the same as
'Shared Contacts' folder in WAB) with OL, if need be:
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files/wab.htm#share. Note that any changes
(additions, deletions, edits, of contacts and folders) made while sharing is
enabled will not be available (displayed) in Address Book if sharing is
disabled.
3 - Are there any Windows Address Book newsgroups or forums around?

OE6-specific newsgroup:
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlookexpress
OL-specific: news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.outlook.contacts

aware of?

There are some, yes. See http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files/wab.htm
(especially http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files/wab.htm#wabexe).

OL is designed to be used on a network. OE is not:
