Is it okay to use a W98 FAT32 formatted hard drive as a slave drive in a XP
NTFS system?

I need to read some data from an old drive in a XP system but I have a
feeling it isn't as simple as just plugging the drive in.

Gareth.

It actually is that simple, XP will have no problems reading the windows 98
FAT32 disk. Just make sure to strap the drive properly, based on how you
will be installing it. If your putting it on the same cable as your current
XP disk then make sure you strap it as a slave or cable select. Check you
bios on the boot to make sure it can see the disk.

Sure, it's OK. Here is some information:

Here is how to slave a hard drive in another machine in order to copy
over its data. We'll call this drive "drive.old" and the target drive
"target.drive". Turn off both computers, and then take drive.old out of
its computer, gently removing the ribbon cable and power connector.
Handle hard drives carefully, and try not to touch any exposed circuit
boards. Look at drive.old - between the connectors for the ribbon cable
and power is a small section with little pins. There will be a tiny
plastic rectangle covering some of the pins. This is called a "jumper"
and is used to set the drive's status to master, slave, or cable
select. The easiest thing to do is to remove the ribbon cable from the
cd drives in the new computer and connect drive.old to one of the
connectors on that cable. If you do this, you won't need to change the
jumpers on drive.old.* Be sure to plug in a power connector to
drive.old. Turn on target.drive's computer. If you've done everything
right, then drive.old will show up in the BIOS and then in Windows. You
can then drag and drop your data from drive.old to the place of your
choice on target.drive. When you are finished, shut down the computer
and reverse your steps. This procedure is actually very easy and
doesn't take long to do.

*If you want to keep drive.old in the new machine, then you'll need to
jumper it correctly. Refer to the manual for the drive if you still
have it, or some drives have jumper settings printed on the top.
Otherwise, go to the drive mftr.'s website and they will have jumper
settings in their Support area.

Yes you can and it is easy. Just make sure it is cabled properly and
the jumpers set properly as the slave drive. Should be just fine.

easy as slicing pie. just be sure to set the slave drive in front of the
master drive.

Sure. I've got three harddrives. My boot drive is NTFS, and my two
other drives are FAT32. No problems reading or writing anything to
the FAT32 drives from the boot drive.

Not only as a slave, but you can use it as the boot drive in which XP is
loaded. XP FULLY supports FAT32.

Thanks for the reply everyone.

I'm not sure why I was so confused - I'm sure I read somewhere that XP NTFS
will alter the filing system of other HDs it comes in to contact with. I
assume I misread the information and it probably related to other NTFS
filing systems and not FAT32.

Yes - it should just show up

You *might* have to "Take Ownership" - search on that in Help and
Support
