W98 and W98SE are slow on K8V Deluxe

Just in case anyone else runs into that problem and wants to know what
to do:

I used my existing Win98 installation with my new Asus K8V Deluxe
Motherboard (and of course an Athlon 64) with a Gforce4 Ti4200 (NV25);
this worked ok, except that the games had slow graphics (especially
notable on Unreal Tournament, which ran at about 7.5 fps even in
low-res modes). Nothing that I tried (playing around with interrupts,
removing all PCIcards etc.) changed anything about that.

So I tried Win98SE. Same result.

Next try: WME. This solved the problem. Now UT runs smootly (at half
the refresh rate with sync enabled), and all the other games run
nicely, too.

My guess is that the VIA drivers don't work well with Win98, so this
probably affects other K8T800 boards, too.

Also, what version Hyperion drivers?

BTW - You may want to look into VMware for experimenting with
old OS's.

Heheh... I don't know anyone hardcore who uses WinME. Most of them (us) use
Win98SE, in addition to the occasional XP - we wouldn't be caught dead with
ME.
I currently wouldn't use a mobo that doesn't support Win98SE.

The one that came on the CD with the board ("VIA K8T800 Chipset Series
Support CD V65.01").

On one of the installation screens for the 4in1 Driver it says "VIA
Service patch 4.48v"

Last thing I read about VMWare was that it emulated some S3 graphics
chip. Not really good for testing the speed of games, but thanks
anyway for the suggestion.
