w2kp reinstall makes windows want to format my CDs

After wiping my HD and partitioning it into two NTFS partitions I
reinstalled Windows 2000 Pro and now every time I put a CD into the
drive I get a message saying that the disk in drive E: is not
formatted, then asking if I want to format it now. I suppose Windows is
failing to recognize the file system on the CD but this seems pretty
wierd. It recognized it just fine to do the install. Ideas? Diagnostics
I can do?

Check Event Viewer for errors. Check Device Manager for error codes and or
non-starting devices.

Thanks, Dave, that got me a bit more information. The device manager
shows no problems, the device status is showing ok. I reinstalled the
current driver after windows update showed no newer one, but to no
avail. The event viewer, however, was full of errors, all stemming from
references to the CD drive. Looking at properties for any of these
shows an error event ID of 7, with accompanying text "The device,
\CDRom0, has a bad block." Below is an edited hex dump of the offending
block - not very informative, to me at least.

I think this is unlikely to indicate a surface or format error,
especially on the manufacturer's disk I tested it with, but am back to
my suspicion that W2K just can't for some reason, read the CD's file
system. I tried logging in as administrator to see if that made any
difference, but no go. Ideas?

The drive might be failing. Does it happen with all media? Did you install
Daemon Tools?

Well thanks very much for that Dave. I thought I would test the drive
by rebooting with a copy of Knoppix in the drive, but in fact as soon
as I put the CD in I got a start screen from the autorun file on it. I
then replaced that disk with the one that I was originally using and it
worked too. So now I've been able to reinstall Office, my original
plan.

I didn't know about daemon tools and in googling for them found the cd
freaks site, which looks as if it will be a good resource.

So for now I'm inclined to think that you were right that the drive is
flakey. I don't need it now for a while and will look into a
replacement just in case. Many thanks,
