W2K will not boot past the logon screen

Windows will get to the point where I can enter my user
name and password, then it will seem to freeze at the
hourglass. I can press Ctrl-Alt-Del to get to the Taskk
Manager and found a few processes tying up the CPU
(100%). I can then choose log off, get back to the logon
screen, again enter my password, and then I can get into
Windows properly. I've taken these programs out of the
registry, but each time I boot up, new ones are made
(different names each time). Anti-virus isn't showing any
viruses, and Ad-Aware isn't showing any more spyware. The
only thing I can find is 'Home Search Assistant' which I
cannot delete either.
Sorry for the long post but I wanted to be thourough.

Anti virus programs aren't that reliable at finding all the critturs. You
very often need to run more than one when you've got a problem like this.
There are several on-line AV programs - I don't have a reference on this
machine unfoirtunately but Google will find them for you.
