W2K Shuts Down To A Black Screen - Cursor Upper Left

When I shut W2K Pro down, the shutdown occurrs normally
through the "saving settings" and "shutting down windows"
dialogues, then goes to a black screen with the cursor in
the upper left corner and hangs. This happened after I
had downloaded and install several updates and patches
from the Microsoft Website. I uninstalled the updates,
but the problem persists. Can anyone help me, please?
 
I'm having exactly the same problem, totally baffling as it doesn't do
it all the time... I don't recall exactly when it started but I always
upload the latest fixes and this started happening in the last few
weeks. On my system the mouse is just frozen in the middle of the
screen, and you can hear the hard drives shut down but computer is still
"on".
