W2K Server slowness

response from a new w2k sp4 server is intermittently
extremely slow. clients accessing home dir on server can
take up to two minutes to get a response. the server has
virus s/w, and it's only function is to house the home and
profile directories.

any ideas what might be causing it to go slow every so
often??
 
What are you using for name resolution? DNS server or host file entries?
What client OSs are involved? Is WINS running on the network?
