Every so often after bootup my laptop gets to the Windows screen where
it says " windows is starting " and then stops there - i.e it doesn't
always procede to the next message which says "starting network
connections" ( or something similar)

I am then forced to switch it off and re start it when it goes into
the "black DOS" screen with a message that it is necessary to check
the drive for errors.

This is then followed by a normal bootup.

The rest of the time it starts normally.

Can anyone explain this , please?

Check Event Viewer and Device Manager for errors and or non-starting
devices.
