W2K Pro Service Pack 4 renders Word 2000 unusable

I have W2K installed and had no problems until I
installed Service Pack 4 (W2KSP4_EN downloaded from
www.microsoft.com). Now I can't open any of my Word 2000
documents--I get the following message: "The file does
not have a program associated with it for performing this
action. Create an association in the folder option
control panel." I checked folder options and the
association is already there.

Any help on this problem is greatly appreciated!
 
delete and recreate the association. use "open with" to recreate the
association, checking the option "Always use this program to open these
files"
