W2K No Desktop Icons - WMI ADAP errors in Event logs - Explorer not running

For the last 3 days our team of techs has been trying to figure out
what the problem is with some of our workstations, but we have yet to
resolve this issue. We have some workstations that for no reason, the
icons on the desktop disappear, the start bar disappears, explorer
doesn't show as running and will not start up and the event logs show
the below error:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: WinMgmt
Event Category: None
Event ID: 60
Date: 11/4/2003
Time: 12:57:01 PM
User: N/A
Computer: BASIC
Description:
WMI ADAP was unable to process the performance libraries: 0x80041001

We have tried everything we can think of including reinstalling SP4,
using the recovery option from the W2K CD, changing reg settings for
WMI counters, using different profiles, deleting profiles and having
w2k recreate them and using sfc to copy in new sys files. This is
really bugging us to no end because nothing is working and there is
nothing on the MS website about the error code. Has anyone run into
this and knows a way to fix it? Any help would be great.

PS - We got hit with Welchia last month and although it isn't bugging
us, it shows up on our Symantec logs as being quarantined all the
time. Could this be the root of our problem?
