Event Log: WMI ADAP unable to load PerfOS performance library

I'm seeing the following warning error in the Application section of the
Event Log:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: WinMgmt
Event Category: None
Event ID: 33
User: N/A

Description:
WMI ADAP was unable to load the PerfOS performance library because it threw an exception: 0xea

Has anyone come across this particular error before, and can advise how
to solve it? I've seen a couple of mentions of it in the XPe newsgroup
archive on Google, but none of them mention a solution.
