w2k install error

M

Mike

I'm trying to setup w2k pro on an older computer, a P3 800 mhz with 256 ram.
It get the GUI portion of setup fine until the 'Installing Components'
section. When setup tries to install the Distributed Transaction
Coordinator, it reboots and the GUI portion of setup begins again. Any
ideas? TIA

How are you installing? To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000
install CD-Rom or setup disks. The set of four install disks can be created
from your Windows 2000 CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the
CD-Rom and execute makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and
follow the prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

Be sure to apply these to your new install before connecting to any network.

I've seen this problem many times on older systems that are not fully ACPI
compliant. You need to force Win2k to use a non-ACPI HAL. Early on during
the setup process when you see the "Press F6" message at the bottom of the
blue screen, hit F7 instead. This will force the use of a non-ACPI HAL and
your install should complete with no problems.

Good luck.
