w2000 usb Problems after faulty device installed

I bought a USB pen camera which mimiced a flash drive, U plugged it into my
W2000 laptop.
it was recognised as HD but hung the system when I opened it in Winodows
Explorer.
Foolishly I then tried on my home XP machine - same problem.
Replaced it with a new one. Same problem. !!
Tried it on another XP system at work - perfection.
Back to 2000 laptop - plugged in & asked H/W manager to unistall == hung
system.
Now laptop & XP machine have decided that my Lexar Jump Drive (or any other
flash drive) is 'Generic Removable drive' and refuse to 'close' or 'Eject'
them saying try later - which never comes-so I have to just yank them out.
How can I recover this problem ?

ran ListUsbDrives.exe with LEXAR only in. got :-

MountPoint = E:\
Disk Name = Lexar
Size = 1039 MB <FAT>
Volume Name = \\?\Volume<dce084f0-817c-11db-b3f3-000fb5008015}\
MultiCardReader = no
NoMediaNoLetter = yes

Friendly Name = LEXAR JUMPDRIVE SPORT
USB Version = 2.0 <high speed>
USB Serial = 00027D01145610130305
USB Port Name = 1-1

insert a known good pen drive into another usb port
run listusbdrives again
get:-
ListUsbDrives V1.6

and FireWire drives and CardReaderFreeware by Uwe Sieber - www.uwe-sieber.de

and nothing until I unplug the pencam drive then :-

remove LEXAR and run again
the 'F:' drive is 'still there', the 'E:' isn't...

It seems to me that the usb subsytem is quite broken.
