w2000 new Hitachi HDD 160gb - ignored by explorer

R

Ray

replaced a secondary drive for my wifes Christmas photos. On boot-up it is
shown as a 137gb drive, but once booted and w2000 has loaded, explorer fails
to recognise it. Tried "Add new hardware" - everything looks fine. Checked
jumper switches, even put the old Seagate drive back to ensure cables ok -
drives C & D come up fine, then back to the new Hitachi and again only the C
drive shows from explorer.

Clues anyone?

Been reading this with great interest since I want
to add a large HDD to a PIII with W2kPro SP 4.

Will take a look at my Bios next time I startup after a power
off.

Will I be OK otherwise?

Well I ran win2k with large hd's with no problems for many years
If you have an early edition of win2k its advisable to create a slipstreamed
installation containg latest sp - in case you ever need it
The maxtor site used to have a free utility the writes the registry changes,
if you are uncomfortable with any manual edit
Generally, Bios's from at least the last 5 years support large hd's

Here's more info for you, to help me pin it down,
it is a second hand HP Vectra VL400

and from aida32 summary:

Intel chipset:Intel Solano i815
Bios type : Phoenix 09/14/00

Went into bios just now
tabbed over to "Advanced"

arrow key down to
Large Disk Access Mode

two choices, DOS or Other
changed to Other....did exit and save

upon rebooting got message saying "NTLDR missing
press any key to restart"
which i did but the message just kept repeating
so i chickened out and returned the setting to [DOS]
which then normally booted to W2kPro

I recently used aida32 to upgrade to the latest drivers
released by Intel but I never learned to upgrade the Bios
would you please be so kind as to point to an U.R.L.
where I can self-learn.

appreciated.

from the URL you already provided:
"If you install hotfixes that enable 48-bit LBA before you install
Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3), the appropriate registry key will be
automatically created during the installation of SP3 to preserve the
data integrity of the hard disk."

I've got SP4 with both my upgrade pack and the NFR CDs
so I should be alright too but I'll d/l that maxtor tool
also.

May be i should start a new thread i love seagates
they were reliable all through my Atari days in the 1980s
to 1998 when I went to Winblows...
"Resistance is Futile..."

http://www.seagate.com/maxtor/

If your win2k installation cd recognises the full size of the hd,

Won't know till I buy the drive or I may just get a 80-120Gig
and use it in the bedroom as a PVR, which it already has a HDTV
tuner in installed and running without a hitch.
on partitioning / formating, then big lba is enabled.

Thanks will check out.
The links below are to HP site, there are instructions for
flashing the bios, it is crucial that these are followed, do it
wrong or suffer a pwr glitch whilst flashing can result in a
'paperweight'
