I just released VueScan 8.0 for Mac OS X, Windows and Linux. You can
download it from:
I've loaded the demo version, bit the background to the UI is black, and it
looks like the legends for the options are also in black - so I can't see
any text alongside any of the boxes.

I'm using XP home.

Oops - answered my own question. It was down to the screen apearance
settings I had. Changed those and it's OK. Odd though I haven't had that
problem with other software.

I'm having a problem with Vuescan Version 8. If I fire up Vuescan with
my scanner turned off (Epson 3170 USB) then Vuescan starts OK but if I
have the scanner on then Vuescan immediately closes after the splash
screen - no error messages.

Did you install in a new folder (rename or move the old version before new
install)? Have you tried deleting or renaming the vuescan.ini file?

I'm using Windows 2000 SP4. When I install VueScan 8.0 it attempts to
install twice (it comes back to the original "do you want to install"
message), something which never happened with the earlier versions. if
I click on a second install it comes up with an error message. Any
suggestions as to why this is happening?

By the way, I haven't had a chance to use it yet, so I don't know if
the install worked properly. I have an Epson 2450 Photo and a Minolta
Scan Dual III attached to my system.

I downloaded and tried the Beta version which worked well except for
the distorted image under certain conditions which others have also
mentioned.

I waited until the 13th and downloaded the full version. It was
working well except for some astrophotos where it couldn't figure out
the frame boundary. I did play around with the crop and offset and
was able to get an acceptable crop on the scan.

Today I've been batch scanning film strips of the Detroit Auto Show
and it can't find the frame edges for these. Crop is on auto, although
I've also tried 35mm. I'm assuming the hard lines in the images may
be confusing it, but not certain. The first frame comes in with about
a 25% offset and is *green* monochrome. Changing the crop to "auto
position" cured the color change, but it did not change the boundary
between frames. The rest of the frames come in with an off set (you
can see part of the previous frame) but they are not all the same off
set. Their colors are good.

I've tried scanning the same film strip with NikonScan and it comes
out fine although the colors are a little off. (IE...it's normal)

Also, instead of retrying, we can go to our Logs directory (folder)
and see if Vuescan left us a present there.

Or if you have a console window open, you can watch it die, then
go look at the crash-log for the details. (The console log shows
where the crash log was written.)
Thread 0 Crashed:

This is the same problem I reported in beta3: some libraries
do not exist on older OS X versions.

Ed Hamrick fixed that one, but now, while the binary starts up,
it is impossible to type new values into any of the numeric input
boxes. (The up/down levers and sliders work.) Presumably this
too happens only on older OS X releases.

Resizing the window (using the grab-able corner at the lower right)
is also quite slow, even when there is no scanned image. I have no
idea why this is so.

The black points on the Minolta 5400 still seem to be off just a
smidge, just as in Vuescan 7.6.*. (In particular, I get better
Velvia slide scans by tweaking the blue black-point from 0.0, the
initial value after locking film base color, to something between
0.002 and 0.01 or so; but of course this is not easy with 8.0 since
I cannot type into the input box, and the up/down click moves in
units of 0.02! :) It *is* possible -- just edit a saved .ini file
manually, then load it.)
