Great. I was wondering how long it would take for the VueScan version
odometer to roll over into the 8.* series. ;-)

New metal look on Mac OS X

Perhaps I'm in the minority on this, but I think the "brushed metal"
look is inappropriate for a serious image-crunching application. I know
Apple's guidelines suggest that apps which represent hardware interfaces
should have metal windows, but their own products are inconsistent on
this. I find the uneven texture is distracting, and ugly.

I don't see any option in VS for switching the window texture. If
VueScan was a Cocoa app, I could open the window's nib and change the
texture bit. Does anyone know if it's possible for and end-user to edit
that bit in a Carbon app? Maybe I need to dust off my copy of ResEdit...

"Prefs|Metal appearance"

Oops. I looked at the Prefs tab, but somehow failed to see that option.
Sorry about that.

But, as long as I'm on the soapbox, could I bring up a related issue?
When I enabled the non-metallized window option in the OS X version of
VueScan 8, I noticed that the window background is considerably lighter
than it was in VueScan 7. I think a medium grey background makes it
easier to judge tonality in the image displays, and is easier on the
eyes.

You need to exit VueScan and restart it to get the grey background.
I couldn't figure out how to do this without restarting the
program.

Actually, when I deselected the "Metal appearance" option, the window
immediately redrew in the plain grey style.

But the grey background in VS 8 is noticeably lighter than it was in VS
7, and this is true even after the application is relaunched. I used
Apple's DigitalColor Meter application to take some quick measurements,
sampling inside the boxes (wells) of the main window. For v8 I get
(247,247,247). For VS 7 I get (229,229,229).

Both of these greys are quite bright. I would prefer to see a darker
background, perhaps similar to what Photoshop provides when you cycle
the tab key with an image open: (192,192,192).

Same issue for the Windows version.

Yes, darker is better, especially for the Preview and Scan tabs. It will
make judging shadows easier and a e.g. Mid-gray background also helps to
judge colorbalance and average brightness.

Ed,

Will you support raw files from the other Nikon DSLR models in a future
release?

Correction: "... when you press the 'f' key with an image open".

The VueScan Release Notes for 8.0 describe the models that
are supported in 8.0. Choose "About" from the menu to display
the Release Notes.

You gotta be kidding? A Beta that says "Purchase now"?
That is not the way it's normally done.

I wanted to pay around with the Beta so see if I would be interested
in purchasing the current version.

Instead of a Beta it's a for sale version with dollar signs all over
the image to the point I can not evaluate it.

Guess I'm going to be sticking with the Nikon software, bugs and all.

Vuescan may be top rated, but how can any one tell without purchasing
it?

It may have better colors as claimed. I can't tell. It may do the
things claimed. I can't tell. What I could tell was the marketing
approach irritates me something fierce and I've spent the last 17
years working with software. I worked as a sys admin, programmer
(they called it developmental analyst to make it sound good) and
finally as a project manager. This is the first time I ever saw a
program claiming to be a Beta set up this way.

From what I could do and I admit I'm not at all familiar with it,
the Nikon Scan is easier to use for batch processing which is the vast
majority of my scanning. I do 5 or 6 at a time with negatives and up
to 50 with slides using the SF210 on the LS-5000 ED

I was not favorably impressed.

What's new in version 8.0:

I am currently trying the 8.0 Beta 2 on my Minolta dual scan IV and am
getting a blank (white positive) image when trying to preview or scan.

Would you like any feedback sent on the Beta versions? I have found
the scan dual IV to be very tricky to initialize, so I would be glad
to provide info by email if you would find it helpful.

Yes, I like hearing about any problems people find.

I've thought about this a bit, and I've modified VueScan 8.0
to not watermark when:

1) For transparent material, when the scan is less than the optical
resolution
2) For reflective material, when the scan is less than the minimum of
optical resolution and 300 dpi

I'll release this in the few hours in VueScan 8.0 beta 3 (or maybe
it will be called Release Candidate 1).
