I'm interested in what Epson 4870 owners have to say about the new
Vuescan with IR support.

It makes a really good film scanner better (if that is possible). Better
that the dedicated Canon FS 4000 and several of the Nikon film scanners. If
I had any gripe it is that there is not a lot of support for various film
types. I have a 90 frame scan underway right now from Fuji NPH 400 for which
there is no selection.

I might point out that 4 previous scanners I used could not handle this film
either. Vuescan does not handle it very well at all but other Fuji film
listed in the drop down menu are fine. The IR channel is a treat, compared
to the ICE of Epson. Much faster than Either Silverfast or Epson's own
interface. Overall I'd rate it at about 8 out of 10. If it had support for a
more diverse range of films, I would go to about 9.5. If it had thought
control I'd give it 10.

If you are shooting on film now, it is relalitively easy to change to a film
with vuescan's support but the application is promoted as being used by
labs. Well... You don't get to choose the film type when a client presents
200 negatives to scan. You can't afford to pass it up either, just because
vuescan doesn't handle that particular film!

I have the Epson 3200. I have tried all the film types available in
Vuescan and I don't normally see much of a difference. There are
about 37 types to choise from in Vuescan.
