I use XP home version, with Office 2003. The problem: Word files now open
with machine language (little squares for all text), or they are completely
blank, or they will open with a bunch of gibberish lines with
vti_encoding/cached/backlink information that I don't understand. I tried
opening original files from backup disks in the a:/drive and from the backup
hard drive on the computer but get the same result. The files were created
with the word program and the creation date/version used at the time does not
appear to be connected to this issue. Does someone know of a simple (or any)
fix for this problem? I would really appreciate any help you may be able to
give. Thank you.

Even though it is not "sticky" in your version of Word, make sure that when
you open the files, the "Recover text from any file" option is not set under
the Files of type control.

This function was not enabled on the computer. I tried turning it on to see
if that made any difference, it didn't. Then I tried the original settings
with the same result. The files in the word program are very large-one has
more than 790 pages. Can this be part of the problem?

Sounds like the file may be corrupt. You would have a backup for a file
that large, wouldn't you?

Try opening a blank document and use Insert>File to insert the file into the
document.

I'll try this. Yes, I backup all files on disks for a: drive and on an
external hard drive as well. When I tried opening backup files from disks
using the a: drive or from the external hard drive backup-got the same
result. There are smaller files made in msworks that can be salvaged and
used to recreate at least portions of the larger word docs, but I will have
to re-enter a significant amount of data if there isn't a fix that will save
these files any other way. This problem has affected a number of doc files
that are older-is it possible that the older word program we used had a virus
or some glich that causes these files to revert to the vti messages, squares
and other such gibberish and it's just now showing up because we converted to
Office 2003? (We did have the pc in for hardware repairs to a very reputable
firm-the fan burned out-and they said the computer was "one of the cleanest"
they had seen-no worms, viruses, ect.). Is there something I'm doing to
cause the files to be "corrupted"?
