VS2008 SP1

Something I do not understand.

I open up VS2008, and click on 'check for updates'.

Nothing was found.
Yet I havnt had the SP1 for vs2008 installed yet.

Perhaps the 'check for updates' needs its own service pack.

Any reason why it doesnt download the service pack? What else isnt it
downloading?

MS gets blamed if they do, and if they don't.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...48-7106-44A7-9649-6D9F6D58056E&displaylang=en

It takes a long time to download and a long time to install.

If "check for update" took 3 hours, people would complain about that.
"Why can't I get the update myself and do the update myself when it takes so
long?"

........

If you need it or want it, go get it.

I hear what you're saying. A browser popping up with the correct link (as
above) might be a nice touch.

But no matter which method they pick, someone always has a problem with it.

Not to mention in the corporate world.

My company downloads it once, and posts it to the intranet, sends an emails
and says "Here is the SP for VS200x", so ump-teen diffferent people don't
download it themselves, aka, suck up the bandwidth.

Yes...
I actually thought I had installed it,
but I am installing sql 2008 express to have a peek at it and thats when it
came up that I wasnt up to date.

I agree - an automatic download isnt the answer, but yes - a list of
potential updates to download would have been nice.

Cheers'

I am still a big fan of MS, but just seemed like "check for updates" - wasnt
doing what it was 'suppose to do'

It doesn't list SP3 for SQL Server 2005...

You could try Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer 2.1, which may or may not
be more thorough regarding program updates.
