VS2005, AS v4 and other questions...

Hi all,

I've been having a play over the weekend with VS 2005 and what an
improvement on 2003. I've come across a couple of things which I can't
seem to work out ... does anybody here know how to solve these?

1. With ActiveSync v3.8 you can cradle the emulator and AS will talk to
it so you can test deployment code etc. I was trying this with AS v4 and
be dammed if I could get the emulator to talk to it. Anybody had any
success?

2. When installing the SQL Mobile server tools to allow RDA push and
pull you have two options. The first called SQL Mobile requires a
publication from the DB to connect into. The second called SQL Server
requires SSL which I don't have. All I want is a simple push, pull to
one table in the DB which is keyed using the pocket pc device id to stop
conflicts. I take it I need to get an SSL cert and use the second option
or is there a work round?

3. If I install the SQL Mobile server tools can I use them to sync SQL
CE 2.0 databases provided the backed is SQL 2005 or would I need my
production server setup to support both sets of tools.

This is all being tested on my home PC which is not a true development
setup all the serious stuff is done in the office where I have SSL certs
at my disposal but would like to continue to play at home if possible.

My thanks for any info
Ryan xXx

Ryan,

In VS 2005, use the Tools, Device Emulator Manager menu option to launch the
Device Emulator. You can select an emulator from the list, connect to it and
then cradle or uncradle it. If you don't have a physical device connected to
Activesync, Activesync will connect to the cradled emulator and ask what
kind of partnership you want.

Hi Ginny,

Yep had tried this and it just didn't want to know. Activesync just
wouldn't see the emulator after I selected the cradle option. I'm going
to have another fiddle with it tonight but though I would check encase I
was missing some new setting.

Thanks for your help

Re: vs2005 emulator not connecting to AS4

Do a manual connect. After AS4 tells you it
can't find anything (if it is?), in AS4, hit,

File, Connection settings,

then hit the

Connect

button at the top right of that panel.
It'll connect everytime, with a fancy
star-studded lightshow while you wait
(not long). At least, that's often how
it only works here (anymore).

Well I did the software reload last night and installed ActiveSync v4
without putting v3.8 anywhere near my PC first and it all worked as
detailed in previous posts, device manager -> cradle.

Last time I had uninstalled 3.8 and then install 4.0 ... at least thats
what I though I had done but something had got mixed up as I did notice
this time is ActiveSync not only checked for COM1 and USB but it also
checked something else as well, I can remember the text at the moment
but I'm sure it started COM (something). Which it didn't do before.

Anyway with that solved I'm looking forward to have a good session and
see what CF 2.0 can do better the CF 1.x

Thanks for all the help
