VS install on vista

I've picked up another laptop, I'm trying to get VS 08 pro on it, but
it won't let me install the framework, every time it says (this OS
doesn't support this version of the framework.) It's running Vista
home premium at the moment, I can rip that off and put XP on if
necessary, but surely that's not necessary?

When it tries to install 3.5 it claims it can't find 2.0 sp1, So I
downloaded that and it refused to install as per the above, then tried
3 sp1, same issue. It's starting to become tiresome.

Thanks

AFAIK Vista comes with framework 2.0. Have you tried to get sp1 for it
from windows update?

IIRC this is the error message you get if you try to install 3.5 with
Windows Update disabled. The 3.5 installer tries to update 2.0 to sp1
using Windows Update (since 2.0/3.0 is an OS component in Vista), it
fails silently and so 3.5 also fails (with a useless error message).

The solution is to re-enable windows update and try again.

Cheers to you both. I struggled with it for a bit longer then when I
shut down it installed 40!! updates. Seems to be ok now. It's the
first time I've installed 2008 on a clean machine.
