VPN to Home Office

I want to set up a VPN for when I am on the road to my
home office. I know how to configure the client to set up
the VPN and I know how to set up the Home computer--
Running XP Pro-- to accept VPN connections. My home
computer is using a gateway router with the PPTP port
forward opened for the connection. I can vpn from in the
house to test the connection. But how would I connect from
my hotel since the client is configured to connect using
the name of my server? I mean that what DNS is needed to
know that I am trying to connect to home? Please help.

So you need to know the WAN interface IP address on the gatewway router.

This can be substituted for a domain name.

problem is that if your ISP gives you dynamic IP addressing to the gateway
router, this address may change over time (subject to DHCP scope settings).

You can register to a variety of free DNS and DDNS services on the Internet
which will allow you to register a domain and provide you with a client
which runs on your home network. This client will update the DDNS service
with your fully qualified domain name (e.g. Mikesdomain.com). This will
address any possible ISP / dynamic IP addressing issues.

Once you get by the addressing aspect, you will need to ensure your gateway
router allows PPTP traffic to go through to the XP (or server) you want to
establish a tunnel with. You seem to have addressed this already per your
original thread.

After that you should be ready to roll.

Paul.

Thanks Paul, so I can use the ip address on the WAN end of
the router--until the ISP changes it because it is dynamic-
- and this should connect? As long as the router is
configured to forward the PPTP? I tried this from within
the lan at home and it did not work. I will try from
outside and see.

Yup pretty much.
